Does Anyone Take These Vows Seriously?

Loved this comment by Alisa below:

This Easter season, I can't wait to renew my Baptismal vows! I also remember what I said "I will" to when my children were baptised; to hand on the faith. I said "I will" for my kids, and for everyone whose baptism I have witnessed. Does anyone take these vows seriously?

What a question to ask this week as we journey toward the Easter Vigil!

Just recently I enrolled a married couple as catechumens. In the Orthodox Church's liturgical tradition the service takes place in the narthex of the church. As is my custom, I invited the congregation to join me in the narthex as I enrolled the couple.

Imagine my delight when, spontaneously, the congregation joined in at the renunciations of Satan and again at the commitment to Christ. It was a powerful moment for all when we realized that while we must all make our commitment to Christ personally and in our own voice, we none of us do this alone.

Afterwards a number of people commented to me how important it was for them to be able to publicly re-affirm their commitment to Christ.

A blessed Easter to you, the folks at the Catherine Siena Institute and all my Catholic & Protestant brethern.

In Christ,

Thanks Fr. G.

It has always been a most meaningful part of the Easter Vigil for me!

And a Blessed Easter in return to you and all our Orthodox brothers and sisters.

This is dumb but I haven't had time to check it out. When will Easter fall for you this year?

Sherry W,

The Orthodox Church celebrates Easter on April 27 this year.

Fr. G:

I did finally look it up last night. It does seems strange than just when we are celebrating at the very earliest possible moment, you are doing so at the latest. And yet, some years we are together.

Sad in some ways. Another consequence of division (although I obviously don't know anything about the debates regarding the timing of Easter and I'm taking no sides)
