Apostolic Oneupmanship

When you've done something like 400 live events, you end up having conversations like this one from yesterday:

Fr. Mike: Who was sent to Fargo in mid-winter - more than once?

Me: Yea, but who drove across the high plains of Kansas and Nebraska eight times in winter?

Fr. Mike: Yeah, but who got to go five times to Hawaii . . .

Me:

Cause you know, in the "I've suffered more than you" wars, five - all expenses paid - trips to Hawaii leaves you pretty much unarmed . . .

Addendum:

It has just occurred to me. I could battle on . . .

Me: Who got dysentery in Jakarta?

FM: Who spent a month in a hospital in South Africa and nearly died?

Me: Yeah, but you were dying on your own time. . . I was dying on Institute time.

Mark:

The films on my Asian airliner were in Chinese and the seats fitted for tiny Asian bodies. I tried to sleep standing up against a wall in the back. Give up. You just can't win.

Ooooooo.

If I were reffing this bout, I'd call the round (if not the match) for the participant with dysentery in Jakarta. Good heavens. It causes great discomfort just to think about it.

Anyhow, carry on, good Christian soldiers...

I got you both beat. I had to fly to New Zealand with Star Trek: First Contact as the in flight film.

Thank God, I fell ill in a home with (miracle of miracles!) a private, air-conditioned bedroom and bath of my own - with no mosquitoes, roaches, or lizards! What that meant to a woman who was in the bathroom every 20 minutes - all night long - only God alone knows.

Most bathrooms even in nice, middle class homes, were like a combination sauna/mosquito farm. You zipped in and out as fast as humanly possible.
