Easter Joy in Malawi
I'm checking out You tube for videos of Catholic life around the globe and as I find good ones, I will post them.
I found the spirit of joy in this clip from an Easter Mass in Malawi absolutely infectious.

Yes there was a joyful spirit but was it about the congregation offering worship to God or the congregation having a good time?
It was Easter. Christ has risen!
When the joy of the resurrection overflows, who among us is not having a "good" time?
True worship and expressive joy are not seen as contradictory in large parts of Africa.
Wow! Talk about your "praise and worship" music! This one brightened up my morning.
This seems to be "jubilatio," as described by Catholic musician, John Michael Talbot.
"Both St. Augustine in the west, and St. John Chrysostom in the east describe 'singing in the Spirit' as, 'Jubilatio,' where the congregation spontaneously sings praises to God without any common melody or words. They simply sing 'alleluias' or 'vowel sounds.' They say that it was so loud that it could be heard to the outskirts of their cities and towns!"
A very interesting article about jubilatio and its history and use in the liturgy and in tradition can be found here: http://www.sfspirit.com/articles/9709/article1.htm
In my opinion the faith of those in Malawi is beautiful and childlike. (in the good sense - like we can't come into the kingdom unless we become like children).
Lord Jesus, make us joyful in our faith!
True worship and expressive joy are not seen as contradictory in large parts of Africa.
Nor in the Catholic Tradition!
Let us all make a joyful noise unto the Lord.
