40 Days for Life

The 40 Days of Life campaign begins today.

40 Days of Life is "the largest simultaneous pro-life mobilization in history: a continuous, 960 hour, prayer and fasting vigil outside of abortion sites in 89 cities in 33 states."

Go here for encouraging stories of the impact made in 7 cities who have finished 40 day campaigns in recent years.

Any readers been involved or had direct knowledge of this initiative?

Yeah, I found out last week about this. Cardinal Keeler, the outgoing Archbishop of Baltimore, is backing this initiative and encouraging Catholics to be involved in this effort.

Interestingly enough two years ago a group of young adult Catholics and Protestants rented a room via a law office's extra room on the 1st floor of an abortion clinic (on 6th floor) in Catonsville, MD with the purpose of using it as a "prayer room" for an end to abortion. This isn't the only place around the states doing this - I know some people in Florida doing this - the theme is "at the foot of the cross."

Anyway, this clinic is one of the three locations in Maryland being targeted by the 40 days campaign. The clinic is situated at the highest place in Baltimore and Baltimore county (see a parallel to the high places of pagan worship in the OT) and has been around since like 1974 (the roots are very deep). About 30-40 abortions go on there a week.

The clinic is about 2 miles from my house and this Saturday about 15 of us young adult Catholics will be out front praying in silent protest.

If you don't have a clinic close to you - please commit to pray and fast for an end to abortion. You can sign-up for updates on their website and they will send a daily e-devotional to guide you in prayer.

The cool thing about this campaign is that it is 1) a practical measure of ecumenism (see Ut Unum Sint) - especially because Catholics have led the way in this battle and 2) it combines the deeper spiritual battle via intercession with practical protest and action to raise awareness and take down abortion mills.

Ultimately, however, I wish, we as Christians, as Catholics, would spend more time in evangelization and discipleship. Last I checked thats a pretty good pro-life initiative :)
