Horror at Virginia Tech

This past weekend, as I mentioned in an earlier post, I had the pleasure of chatting with nearly a dozen students from my alma mater, Michigan Tech. They were bright, articulate, faith-filled mechanical, biomechanical, and environmental engineers. There was even one studying anthropology (not an option 25 years ago when I was at MTU). They talked about the heavy work load at Tech, and I admired their willingness to take precious time away from their studies so they could deepen their faith and learn more about helping others encounter Jesus.
So I read with a bit more sorrow of the tragedy unfolding at Virginia Tech, where at least 31 students like the ones I dined with this weekend were killed by a gunman, and 29 others wounded. So many lives ended abruptly and prematurely. How many might have gone on to help others as engineers, physicians, researchers, teachers, lab technicians. So many others scarred and scared.
Please pray for them, and for their families and friends. Pray, too, for the disturbed individual or individuals who perpetrated this crime. Finally, let's try to appreciate the people in our life a bit more. We do not know the day nor the hour when we will be taken to the Lord.

Pray too for all the people who will pastorally support and encourage all those on Virginia Tech campus. May the campus ministers find the strength and courage to speak God's love.
Thanks for the reminder, Sue. Perhaps the common suffering experienced by the VT campus will help the campus ministers to work together and overcome whatever differences they might cling to in happier times.
Dear Fr. Mike,
thanks for your kind and sensitive post. As a former professor, this leaves faculty all over the country feeling very frightened and saddened.
Peace be with you,
Tara
