Fr. Mike Reveals All

I'll be in and out today as Fr. Mike Fones, my Dominican Co-Director, got in town at midnight last night and is scheduled for his third round of shoulder surgery this afternoon, so I will be ferrying him to and fro in drug-seeking behavior mode.

That rarest of rare birds, an obsessively fit Dominican, he is a weight-lifter and has been lamenting his shriveling frame during his recuperation so we are praying that surgery number three will do the trick. Your prayers for him would be greatly appreciated.

Fr. Mike, who usually strikes innocent bystanders as the world's nicest guy, is, in fact, a dangerous man. (I think the shaved head and goatee gives him the classic look of a James Bond super villain myself.)

The look you see here is the look that send shivers down my spine. It means that he has either 1) thought of some new way to torture me or 2) has thought of something new for us to do. Either way, its trouble. The fact that he was holding St. Cyril of Jerusalem's Catechetical Lectures at the moment this picture was taken is just another part of that deceptive "angel of light" persona. The orange glow from the wall behind really brings out the Jesuitical gleam in his eye. Tres OP.

I take exception to your post, Sherry. While I admit to torturing you with periodic teasing, I am not the co-Director who thinks up new things to do. I am the one who receives e-mails with subjects like, "Fascinating interview with former evangelical" or "Fascinating article on conversion" or "Fascinating..."
You get the idea. Now I have to get back to writing what I hope will be a fascinating piece on intentional discipleship for the e-Scribe.

If Fr. Mike was a Bond villain, he'd need a cool name, like Screwball.

Sherry, I really think we should sponsor a caption contest for that picture. And we should do it soon before Fr. Mike's surgery-induced drug haze ends.

I'll bet he is. He looks like a used car salesman ;)

Stephen,

Welcome to this blog! Glad you found us here. Since the Catherine of Siena Institute just started this blog, there are only a few entries, but it promises to be a pretty active place once we get moving.

Feel free to dive in and bring others with you.

I just dropped Fr. Mike off after 7 1/2 hours of fetching, snoozing, reading, waiting, and laughing - as his sense of humor is one of the first things that emerges as he comes out from under anesthesia.

It all went very well although they did find a rotator cuff tear (we were hoping they wouldn't) and had to stitch it up. The patient was briefly bummed upon awakening by the prospect of another couple weeks of considerable pain and 6 more weeks of painful physical therapy. He just went through the whole process in November with his other shoulder and, like the memory of childbirth, it suddenly becomes very fresh when you are faced with living through the same thing again.

I cheered him up considerably by point out that this sure beat having both shoulders *replaced* as one of his siblings has to do.

I figure that my job is to boost Fr. Mike's spirits by providing the familiar undercurrent of non-empathy that Dominicans are famous for. It seemed to work because Fr. Mike was his cheerful self by the time I got him home.

Our kinder, gentler non-Dominican readers can encourage him in his recovery by posting encouraging messages here.

Fr. Mike,

Hope that your shoulder is feeling better. If you need suggestions on how to cook one-handed, let me know. :)
